Woodland wellbeing for people with dementia

This autumn we have been involved in a pilot project with the Forest of Avon Trust and Bristol Dementia Wellbeing Service.

We ran 12 sessions at Conham River Park for people with dementia and their partners and carers.

The sessions were aimed at helping people relax, meet others and enjoy and connect with nature. Activities included elements of mindfulness, walking (looking closely and noticing the plants, animals and landscape around us), art and poetry, woodland crafts and of course making tea and snacks on the fire!

Feedback was positive both from people with dementia and their families. People commented particularly on the supportive atmosphere of the group and the way in which they felt they were welcomed as individuals with interesting past lives.

We are looking forward to next month when staff teams from the Wellbeing Service will be coming out to the woods to experience a little of what the sessions involved.
